Katahdin, located in the heart of Baxter State Park and covering 204,733 acres, is the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail extends 2,143 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia, to the top of Mount Katahdin. Baxter State Park was a gift to the State of Maine from former Gov. Percival P. Baxter.
The unrivaled beauty of this region makes our wilderness adventure attractive to families, photographers, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Salmon, Lake Trout, Brook Trout, small-mouth bass, pickerel and white perch are local catch for the fishermen.
Moose, eagles, bear, deer, beavers, otters, rabbit, skunk, ducks, loons, grouse, geese and fox are common attractions.
Camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, boating, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, golfing and swimming are all local area activities.
THE LAKES: The lake system called the Pemadumcook Chain of Lakes across from Millinocket Lake consists of 7 lakes: Ambajejus, Pemadumcook, Elbow, North Twin & South Twin, Middle Jo- Mary and Upper Jo-Mary. It is 16 miles in length from the public boat landing on the Golden Road to the Marina on South Twin Lake. These “lakes” were once narrow rivers, but with the dam and power system requirements of the paper industry, are now flooded lakes. Ambajejus Boom House is located on Ambajejus Lake, displays the old days of papermaking and is accessible by snowmobile or boat and on an honor system.
